    • Lupe Castaneda: One of the Employment and Training Counselor with the Workforce Investment Opportunity Act (WIOA) Program: Scholarship funding using Job Link; funding for up to 5,000 dollars; if you’re in the last two years of the nursing program, you can apply; funds can only be used for school expenses; eligible if receiving unemployment or if receiving any type of supportive services such as CalFresh, etc. Targeted resume building, on-the-job training, childcare, are included services. Feel free to contact Lupe.
    • Anne Seed: Admission Counselor from Samuel Merritt University: Accelerated BSN program and entry-level MSN program (FNP and case management program 3 1/2 and 2 1/2 years respectively) information provided in handouts (designed for individuals with Bachelor’s degrees in a non-nursing field); info sessions encouraged, located in Oakland, San Mateo, and Sacramento; contact Anne for more questions: [email protected], (510) 869-6610.

  1. North Bay Discovery Day: Lots of children went to the booth and learned about hand-washing with “Glo Germ” lotion

  2. Blood Drive: Nov 30th 10am-3pm
    • On campus, McKinley Gym
    • Will need volunteers, sign-ups available! Volunteer hours 8-4:30 in two hour increments (Volunteer first and then give blood after).
    • Free Six Flags Tickets for those who sign up to donate blood!
    • Sign up at BloodHeroes.com; Create an account, find our blood drive, and sign up; all the blood stays in Sonoma County to help somebody in our community
  3. Honor Cords: Marika
    • Please submit proof of CNSA membership
    • Rule and regulations for honor cords: Be a member for 6 months, attend 2 events per semester, and at least 3 meetings (15 points; one hour is one point).
    • For non-nursing students: one year as a member (two semesters); minimum attendance of 3 events and 3 meetings per semester (30 points; one hour is one point)

October 10th, 2016 Meeting Minutes

Call to order at 10:05 am

I. Old Business:

Sonoma Serves: Went out to Redwood food bank and packaged and sorted through food

CNSA State Convention:

  • Opportunities to network with other people and schools.
  • Really good opportunity for pre-nursing students to talk to other schools about their programs.
  • Shauna was voted the community health director for CNSA and has a seat on the CNSA state board
  • Many awards and scholarships are available to students who apply
  • Paige, Megan and Carly sat in the house of delegates and represented the chapter and participated in the voting process

II. Officer Reports:

Treasurer’s report: bank account balance: $4,618.69; Balance will change from sticker fundraising and refund for conference

Any news or updates from other officers:

  • Paige- Director of Marketing: sweatshirt sales are now back open
  • Kevin- Lobos fundraiser, Oct. 24th

IV: New Business:

Guest Speaker: Laura Sealock and Jennifer Fennerl, Reach Helicopter Transport Team, 10:30am

  • Over 30 bases across Oregon, California, Nevada, Wyoming, Colorado, Texas and more
  • Both worked in critical care before applying to REACH
  • Usually a flight nurse and a medic or two flight nurses, no doctors present
  • Uses a lot of critical thinking and protocols to guide practice
  • REACH requires at least 3 years of critical care or ED experience, the busier the unit the better
  • Need NRP, PALS, ACLS, Trauma course and CCRN or flight nurse certificate
  • More autonomy in practice

North Bay Discovery Day: October 29th, 8:30am-4:30pm

Sonoma County Fairgrounds- handwashing/ geo germ gel station

Over 14,000 4th-8th graders come to participate in a hands on to find out more about the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math fields. Need Volunteers!! Shauna-morning point person, Paula-afternoon point person

Petaluma HOSA: November 8th Need a few volunteers

Blood Drive: Nov 30th 10am-3pm. On campus, McKinley Gym; Will need volunteers, sign-ups at next meetingIf you want to volunteer and donate, try to volunteer in the morning and donate in the afternoon

The Pantry: A resource on campus for students and people in the community to come and get supplies they need

Elections: The current board is coming to a close in December; We will be holding elections at the next meeting in November so the incoming board can shadow the outgoing board in the December meeting

Honor Cords: Point system based on attendance to meetings and events will earn cords which can be worn at graduation

Mentor Program: Coordinator Jackie will be emailing mentor pairings by the end of the week

September 12th, 2016 Meeting Minutes

Guest Speaker: Darin Wright: Navy Medical Officer Recruiter: Hospital Corpsman

  • Opportunities in the United States Navy Nurse Corps: Reserves or Active duty options
  • Where? Clinics, Hospitals, Operating Stations on ships, stay home and be a reservist (drill once a month at a local hospital)
  • Need: Peri-operative nurses, CRNA’s, Med-surg, critical care nurses
  • Juniors and Seniors: NCP one year option (best route for students): 10,000 sign on bonus, 1,000 a month to use. Give back four years to the Navy as a nurse in whatever capacity you want as a nurse. One window to apply: July 1st-September 2nd
  • Nurse Corps harder to get into after you graduate: one year of experience plus 90 days in your specialty of choice to be considered as a candidate; Nurse Corps 30 days of paid leave a year, uniform, PT, travel around the world, humanitarian outreach, etc.

    • Deadline to turn in form and register as a member (no payment necessary if less than 13 sign-ups; Discussion regarding utilizing nursing club budget for extra costs like hotel reasons about $300-800): Friday, Sept. 2nd

April 13, 2016 Meeting Minutes

Call to Order 10:03 am

 Old Business:

  1. Thank you to everyone who helped out with Expanding Your Horizons, Seawolf Decision Day, and Relay for Life! Raised almost $1600! We placed #4 out of 20 teams. The event reached goal of $11,000.
  2. CNSA Conference report: Occurred on March 12th; Paige attended a breakout session at the conference called a CPR block party. This topic is of interest for a future event at Sonoma State as a campus-wide outreach for next semester. Paula and Paige are exploring this.

Officer Reports:

  1. Treasurer’s report: bank account balance over the last 8 months: $543 deposited, and withdrew $1566. Current balance is $2531.30
  2. Any news or updates from other officers
    • Jaqueline Vickerman: event for end of the year potluck posted on Facebook in Sonoma State Lakes. Event page has a sign up for food items. Feel free to bring more than necessary ?
    • Rebecca Hildebrant: Webpage is continuing to stay current
    • Marika Schipper: Q&A doc complete and posted.

III: Advisor Report:

  1. Rachel Napoli: Special thanks to those who have participated in events recently; information and ideas for fundraising will be presented soon.

IV: New Business:

CNSA/NSNA Membership: eventually, all club members will be required to join at NSNA (below) since we are becoming an official chapter. Register on national website which automatically gives you membership through California. Lots of scholarship opportunities, networking, loan forgiveness, etc.

  • Join NSNA at https://nsnamembership.org/ $40 membership fee
  • All students can join and become involved!
  • Converging into a CNSA chapter and ALL members will need to join

CNSA Annual Conference: October 7-9th (Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon): Be registered at least a few weeks before the conference (sooner rather than later is better) We need to know by July who will want to go (for purposes of the club applying to grants).

Fundraising Ideas: Rachel has ideas for magnets, first aid kits, keychains and lanyards, car stickers, parent nursing memorabilia, clipboards, etc. Nice Jackets (neoprene on outside and fleece on the insides); Scrub jackets; hoodies

Health Fair: June 9th 2-4pm (Tuesday) Location TBA

  • Petaluma Retirement Community
  • BP screening, information table, breast cancer awareness, diabetes education
  • Need Volunteers to help out with the event

Kawana Career Day: Friday, April 22nd, 3-5:30pm; Very young kids; Marika will head it up

Seawolf Decision Day: April 9th from 9am-4pm

  • Need 10 nursing student volunteers to help with freshman activities

Expanding Your Horizons: April 2nd

  • Nursing Dept. is putting on the event for middle and high school students wanting to learn about nursing
  • Need 6-8 Volunteers
  • Going to the schools, probably an all day event
  • Sheet passed around
  • Redwood Café Fundraiser: Cancelled due to Tax ID number
  • We can no longer use the schools tax ID

Officer Reports:

  • Pre nursing liaison- got about 50 names of people who want to be involved in a mentor mentee programed
  • Mentor mentee coordinator- created a questioner for all pre nursing students who want to be involved in the new program
  • Events coordinator- Fundraiser at Sal’s Pizzeria for Rely for Life fund on March 31st 11:30-8:00pm in Cotati, Creaser Chaves day, getting takeout counts! 20 people are needed for the fundraiser to go.
  • Raley’s is willing to donate water to any event

New Business:

NSNA/CNSA Northern CA Conference: March 12th

  • Renting a car
  • Money coming out of club fund, approved by club

Relay for Life: The Coderunners

  • Link to website to become part of the team: http://main.acsevents.org/goto/coderunners
  • Sign up online, like will be one Facebook, the deadline is the day before, but the earlier people sign up the better
  • Need cancer type and a fight back event
  • Ovarian, Thyroid cancer with activity of passing apple with neck, testicular/prostate, bone
  • Use a Facebook pole to determine which cancer
  • Google doc with time slots of 2 hours, can sign up for multiple time slots, shifts will also be specified with who will be working the booth versus walking the track
  • Cannot sell or give out food, but we will have some at the booth for club members
  • The day starts in the quad with an opening ceremony then some team members will be participating in the relay, walking around the track and other team members will be at the table facilitating the activity.
  • For donations, checks should be made out to American Cancer Society, Shauna Fassino will have donation envelopes for checks (and cash) to be put into individuals accounts
  • Carly Smith and Shauna Fassino have the bags to be sold and decorated for the Luminaria ceremony, suggested price of $10 per bag but it can be less or even free. After bag has been decorated return it to Carly or Shauna and they will give the bag to the event coordinators who will put the bags out with candles on the day of the event
  • Family and friends are welcome to come out on the day of the event and support, but signups will be limited to only members of nursing club
  • For any questions about Relay for Life, contact Shauna
  • Club T-shirts:

  • About 20$, boys and girls
  • These shirts will be used for all club events including Relay for Life

1. OrgSync Wellness Check Survey Results: summary is that club members lack a clear vision for club purpose.

Suggestions by members for club activities:
• More involvement in the campus
• Community Service Events
• CPR mannequin dummy demonstration on campus
• Blood Pressure Screening on campus
• Clean-up the County: gardening
• Community Education Forum: Exercise, diet, etc. Possible location RP library?
• Elementary School: BP checks

2. Nursing Q & A today at 11 am in Sonoma Valley Room, Q & A at 6 pm in Dry Creek Valley room

3. Nursing Club tabled at the Involvement Fair last Wednesday (2-3-16): new members interested

4. Changes proposed for Club Constitution:

•Condensing officer roles, some roles eliminated
• Dues being reduced to $10 per year
• Length of office positions 1 ½ years: end of fall until spring of following year.
• 10:10 am – all in favor.

Vice President/Graudate Liaison, Marikia Schipper:
• Working on determining role tasks: right now coordinating with Senior class after they graduate (places of employment, etc); social events for club may or may not be absorbed by that role or instead of Events Coordinator absorbing that role; responsible for obtaining guest speakers for club meetings

Webmaster/secretary, Rebecca Hildebrant:
• Website is being kept current

Mentor/Mentee Coordinator, Jackie Vickerman:
• Nursing Q & A looking to apply at the end of the month or going to apply next year; consider moving mentor/mentee picnic for newly accepted nursing students to week after finals as opposed to the end of summer (details to be decided).

6. Relay for Life: Friday, April 8th 12 pm-12 am (midnight)
• Team Name: Code Runners (as in “code blue” or “code red”)
• Go to website and click “I want to join this team” https://main.acsevents.org/goto/coderunners
• Proceeds go to American Cancer Society
• Located on Campus (between Darwin and Stevenson)
• Other people can donate to our team: Share on social media and ask friends and family to donate
• Goal for fundraising: $1000 for club and/or $100 for individual (Relay for Life T-shirt is a reward for $100 personal goal)

7. NSNA Northern California Conference Saturday, March 12th (first Saturday of Spring Break), at Samuel Merritt in Oakland: Nursing students only: $40 to register with NSNA; Conference is free; potentially take one van; Rachel Napoli = potential driver

8. SeaWolf Decision Day: April 9th – We need 10 nursing club members to sign up.

9. Expanding Your Horizons April 2nd – Nursing Department Event held at SSU for Middle School and High School students to educated about the Nursing Profession: Games: Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune

10. Website Renewal: Re-evaluate
• Resources Tab: CLEP, Dates Grad application deadlines, Registration Dates, Pre-nursing application deadlines, WEPT information, Pinning Ceremony (20th of February)
• Frequently Asked Questions from Q & A sessions: applying to other programs
• Kristi Hellman can put Nursing Club Link on Nursing Department Club page

Called to order at 10:03am.

1. Club Approval granted for Condensing Roles:

• Graduate liaison absorbed by vice president role: Marika Schipper

2. Danielle from Slice: Survey for Nursing club: Survey will posted on website and orgsync and each member of the nursing club needs to take it to make positive changes to the club. It needs to be completed by the next meeting

3. Meetings will be second Wednesday of every month: Feb 10, Mar 9, Apr 13, May11 all in the Sonoma Valley room

4. Pre-nursing student Q/A for application review and pre-nursing related questions: Wednesday 12-1 are available and evening time available as well. To-be-scheduled

5. Info session that Deb Roberts holds is important for Pre-nursing students to attend.

6. Club Fair Feb 3, 2016 11:30-1 pm (Wednesday): email will be sent out for sign-ups for participation: open to all club members

7. Relay for Life: April 8th (Friday): At SSU: to be decided if club wants to be involved

8. National Student Nurse Association: Looking into different events and conferences; We can apply for grants to be able to travel and attend. Shauna will look into more information
